A hand-carved wooden tray from Switzerland, c.1930s, attributed to the circle of Rudolf Steiner and the Anthroposophical movement.
Beautifully tactile, with a satisfying form — each stroke of the maker’s tool is visible and felt within this piece.
This piece is a wonderful example of Steiner’s Anthroposophical design principles — celebrating organic forms, natural materials, and ‘evidence of the creator’s soul in the work’.
It bears an indistinct maker’s stamp on the base.
In good vintage condition, with age-related wear that enhances its character.
30.5(w) × 16.5cm(d)
Historical context
Rudolf Steiner was the forefather of Anthroposophical design, founding the Goetheanum (school) in the early 1900s. The Goetheanum attracted artists and makers to the Swiss town of Dornach, fostering an artistic community and movement.
Informed by Steiner's design principles, several woodworking studios were established both within the Goetheanum and the wider Dornach area. The pieces produced during this period (c. 1920–40s) are typically attributed to Rudolf Steiner's circle and the Goetheanum.
