Smoke-fired ceramic vessel by British ceramicist Elspeth Owen.
A sculptural form, shaped through a combination of pinching, shaping, and hollowing directly from a single piece of clay, creating an organic, irregular, and undulating silhouette.
Its surface is tactile — smooth yet textured — finished in a sand-coloured slip with subtle flashes of burnt orange, resulting from the smoke-firing process.
Elspeth’s work is intuitively led; she refers to her process as a collaboration between her hand and the clay. She works directly in clay, using only her hands and basic manual tools.
She has worked from her studio in the Cambridgeshire countryside for over 50 years, with her work featured in notable collections, including the Fitzwilliam Museum and the V&A.
