A ceramic vase (c.1940s) by Italian ceramicist Guido Gambone, produced for C.A.S. Vietri, Italy.
Hand-decorated with a painterly illustration of a mother and child beside a grazing animal. Gambone’s early works were deeply inspired by his rural upbringing in southern Italy — often depicting figurative motifs rooted in folk art and evoking a naive charm.
His glazes, achieved by mixing in crushed glass and sand, create a distinct volcanic texture — synonymous with Gambone’s pieces. These early works typically feature striking Mediterranean blue paired with deep, earthy tones.
Guido Gambone is considered one of the most important Italian ceramicists of the 20th century — pioneering expressive, experimental approaches to decoration and form, and helping to shape the evolution of modern Italian ceramics.
