Jane Perryman Ceramic Bowls

A pair of smoke-fired ceramic bowls by British ceramicist Jane Perryman.

Hand-built with a double wall and rounded bottom allowing them to gently rock.

Perryman wanted to explore the duality between fragility and strength — the bowls appear heavy, and yet are deceptively light; their kinetic nature suggests a vulnerability, yet they cannot fall, always returning to their centre of gravity. They invite interaction and create tension.

Left mostly unglazed, exposing irregular texture achieved through adding rice and coffee grounds to the clay, which burn away, leaving behind delicate holes.

Each piece is triple-fired — once low before being further worked on, then high, and finally smoke-fired, bringing out the soft wispy tones around the rims.

Impressed with the artist's mark on the base.
