A sculptural wood-turned vase (1980) by Californian artist Hap Sakwa.
Hand-turned from the root of the Buckeye tree — native to California and prized for its swirling grain and rich, contrasting tones. Small and beautifully formed, this piece honours the natural outlines and textures of the root from which it was shaped.
Sakwa is considered one of the master woodworkers of the 20th century, turning to the craft after a fateful summer at Woodstock ’69 — an experience that changed the course of his life, leading him to leave university and devote himself to woodworking.
He became part of the back-to-the-land movement, born from 1960s counterculture — rejecting mass production, championing craftsmanship and natural materials, and honouring the land from which they came. His contribution to the American studio craft movement is widely recognised, with works held in the permanent collections including MoMA and LACMA.
Hand-signed and dated (11/80) on a brass insert at the base.
In very good vintage condition, with some age-related wear — notably some light surface scratches, nothing that detracts from the integrity of the piece.
