A large abstract bronze sculpture (c.1990s) by the elusive French artist James Mercurin.

A remarkable piece, with an organic, undulating form. Its irregular, curved edges create a silhouette that shifts from every angle. Cast from solid bronze, with substantial weight, a warm tone, and subtle ageing — it is beautifully tactile.

This is an artist’s proof, likely one of a kind, created as part of Mercurin’s exploratory creative process.

Mercurin is known to have produced his bronze works at the Clementi Foundry in Meudon, just outside Paris — one of the most revered bronze ateliers of the 20th century. Joan Miró is widely documented to have worked with Clementi, along with other pre-eminent artists including Jean Arp and Cy Twombly.

While this proof does not bear a foundry stamp, it is consistent with Mercurin’s other works known to have been produced at Clementi. The sculpture is stamped with the artist’s name on the base.

In very good vintage condition, with some age-related wear — nothing that detracts from the beauty of the piece.
