A large handcrafted ceramic vase by Welsh ceramicist Julian King-Salter, created in c.1985 using a combination of pinching and coiling techniques.
King-Salter’s work embraces the rhythm of making — this piece was built by hand, allowing its shape to emerge organically. The surface is subtly textured with dimples across its body, repetitive thumb marks that trace the making and building process.
‘Making on a plinth, I move around as I make, allowing some dance to enter into the pot.’
Decorated with freehand strokes of colour in dark grey, off-white, and muted tones of purple — expressive and painterly, with watercolour-like qualities.
Originally acquired from Beaux Gallery in Bath, one of the first to represent King-Salter’s work, this piece bears a coiled cord impression on the base, a marker's mark inspired by Bronze Age pottery.
