Hand-carved oak sculpture by English artists Malcolm Martin & Gaynor Dowling.
A huge vessel-like form with a shallow, flattened profile, sculpted from a single piece of oak.
This is a beautifully tactile work of art — with bands of hand-tooled ridges forming irregular ripples. Each stroke of the sculptor’s tools leaves a visible impression, a wonderful expression of the craftsmanship and intuitive process within this piece.
The oak is limed and scorched, resulting in light chalky tones contrasted by subtle dark, charcoal edges.
Martin and Dowling have collaborated since 1997, working at every stage of the process from their studio in Gloucestershire. They work from hardwoods native to England, using only hand tools and traditional techniques.
They are represented by galleries Maud & Mabel and Flow Gallery, where similar examples of their work can be seen.
Impressed with the maker’s mark on the base.
In very good condition, with some age-related wear which adds to its character. This is a contemporary artwork sourced from the secondary market.
