A raku fired ceramic vase (1988) by British studio ceramicist Peter Hayes.
This vase has a wonderful silhouette — an elegant little neck atop a squat, oblong body. The profile graduates from thick to thin and stands charmingly wonky.
It has contrasting sides: The front, a rich dark brown with beautiful hand inscribed detail. The back, lighter in colour with a crackled surface resulting from Haye’s personally developed raku firing process.
Haye’s work is influenced by his travels — particularly his time spent living and travelling through Africa where he worked alongside local makers and potters.
There is a brilliant film of Hayes in his studio talking about his practice and influences, which you can find here.
The vase has a minor surface scratch to the front side, however this does not impact the beauty of the piece. Otherwise in good vintage condition.
Artist’s signature inscribed to the base.
